We just wrapped up our ODWG Camp at Nash Correctional, and it was an incredible experience. We had a great group of dads, and Bob and I had the privilege of pouring into them what we had to offer. I’ve heard Scottie paint the picture of the value of a dad from the perspective of a child whose father was incarcerated, and it ‘s always a powerful reminder of how even in difficult circumstances, a father’s influence can still make a lasting impact.
As a dad myself, I see things through a different lens. I never truly understood vulnerability until I walked into the waiting room holding our firstborn son. In that moment, I felt an overwhelming mix of love, responsibility, and fear. It was as if I was suddenly aware of the immense weight of my role as a father. I know many of the dads we work with feel that same vulnerability and responsibility. The value of godly dads is invaluable…
Fathers play a crucial role in their children’s growth, yet their involvement is often underestimated. When dads are actively engaged, the benefits are immense for both the child and the family as a whole. An engaged father boosts a child’s confidence, security, and emotional well-being. Studies show that kids with involved fathers tend to have fewer behavioral problems and stronger emotional resilience.
Children with involved fathers perform better academically. Fathers who participate in their child’s education—whether through reading, helping with homework, or discussing school—encourage a love of learning and improve cognitive skills. Fathers also who teach their children to take risks, solve problems, and build relationships help equip their children to navigate social settings with more confidence and empathy,
When fathers are engaged, children are less likely to engage in risky behaviors and more likely to succeed in school and life. Such is the key to raising well-rounded, emotionally healthy children. By being present and engaged, fathers not only help shape their child’s future but also enjoy a fulfilling and meaningful relationship with them. It’s never too late for dads to make a positive impact in their children’s lives.
So, the next time you witness a dad stepping up to be a father—whether it’s at one of our ODWG Camps inside a penitentiary or in line at the grocery store—take a moment to encourage him. In his influence lies the power not just to change a child’s life, but to alter the course of an entire family and legacy.
