Pictured here is a snapshot from our Team Dinner in Kenedy, TX, after a fulfilling day spent with the men at the Connally Unit. It’s moments like these that highlight the incredible spirit of our volunteers—a group united by a common love for the incarcerated.

A weekend in a prison always reminds me of the preciousness of freedom, especially when stepping through the gates on the way out. It’s a powerful and surreal feeling. One contributing factor is the realization that those dads are still there facing the challenges and hardships of a life behind bars.

Beyond the reminder of freedom is the contagious presence of Christ’s love. The warmth felt within those walls for the offenders is a love that transcends ordinary understanding. Such can only come through the help and strength of the Spirit. Words often fall short—you just have to experience it firsthand. It brings to mind the moment when Philip told Nathanael that they had found the Messiah. Nathanael questioned, “‘Can anything good come out of Nazareth?’ To which Philip simply replied, ‘Come and see’” (John 1:46).

There’s also a special closeness among those of us in the Forgiven Ministry family. It reminds me of the joy I felt as staff member at Bible camps, where each year felt like a reunion—not just for the campers, but for us! This is the spirit I see and feel each of our ODWG camps, no matter the location. I’ve been blessed to meet volunteers from all over—North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Texas, and now Tennessee. Each camp is like a family reunion, filled with familiar faces and many new ones.

One final observation that stands out is the joy that arises when longtime volunteers enter the prison and reconnect with the dads they’ve invested in over the years. It beautifully underscores the lasting impact we’re privileged to make together. Witnessing their smiles, hearing their laughter, and seeing them build bridges of reconciliation with their children not only reinforces the value of our mission, but highlights the meaningful connections that can form despite the barriers.

Whether over Tex-Mex in Texas or catching up at camp, being surrounded by our volunteers is an incredible blessing. May God continue to bless them and grow their number. They are the heart and hands of Forgiven Ministry, bringing hope and love to those who need it most. If you’re haven’t experience a ODWG Camp firsthand, “come and see”!

You are loved!
